  • Small-group tour
  • Get off the beaten track in a 4x4
  • Get inside tips from a local

Leave your centrally located Reykjavik hotel by ‘super jeep,’ a uniquely designed SUV mounted on monster tires that measure upwards of 38 inches (95cm) tall. Relax in the spacious seats as you travel out of the city and into the countryside to hunt for the famous northern lights.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are caused by magnetic storms that graffiti the sky with vibrant colors. Depending on certain variables—weather, location, chance—you could strike gold, or rather yellowish green and occasionally crimson, but there is never guaranteed admission to this light show. Throughout the evening, your guide will constantly be on the lookout for the best places to spot them, and your jeep will be able to take you to those hard-to-reach places that standard tour coaches can’t access.

In between stargazing, learn all about Iceland's northern lights from your guide. Iceland is known as one of the most accessible places in the world to see the spectacle, home to vast swathes of remote countryside far from urban lights that can often hinder sightings of the lights. Located at extreme latitude, the country is close to the Earth’s magnetic poles, meaning that when the solar winds collide with the magnetic forces, surreal ribbons of color are etched across the crystal-clear night skies. Have your camera ready to capture the phenomenon!

After roughly three hours of exploring the countryside on the lookout for the lights, travel back to Reykjavik and finish your experience with a drop-off at your hotel.

Please note: If you don’t see the northern lights on the night of your tour, you can rebook with your guide at no extra cost, subject to availability.

Absolutely a great trip. Our tour guide Clemmie was awesome! We were like storm chasers in the night driving around looking for clear skies and the Northern Lights! We saw them at three different stops and they were spectacular! Clemmie explained how to use your camera to take pics which really helped a novice like me. And he even knows how to take pics of you with the northern lights in the background. So amazing. GO ON THIS TOUR!

The tour guide was excellent and there being only seven people in the super jeep made it a very friendly experience. Luckily, having only been out about 45 mintes, the guide though he saw something beginning to happen so drove off road to a quiet location. Over the next 90 minutes or so the Northern Lights thrilled us all with an amazing display. Brilliant.

This was an amazing tour! Our guide, Gilli, was excellent! He was very knowledgable and was constantly checking to see where would be the best place to see the northern lights. We drove 2 and a half hours north of Reykjavik and we managed to see them!! They were totally worth it! We were able to stay out a bit later than perhaps other tours would allow, as it is a smaller tour than most, which is a good thing - a more personal touch. Totally recommend this tour!

This was the hi-light of our trip!! We had a brilliant guide who gave us information about Iceland while searching for the lights!! We had to go quite far 2hrs until the jeep came to an abrupt halt and we jumped out of the jeep to a 45min display of wonderful Northern lights!!! Spectacular!!!!!

If you're wondering whether or not to spend the extra money on the Super Jeep vs the bus tour, do it. Just do it. We drove past a parking place for the buses filled with hundreds of tourists. Instead, we were isolated, and able to enjoy the sites with a small group of people. Klemenz was an amazing guide and driver. We weren't able to see the lights on the first night due to clouds, and he was very realistic about chances. I rebooked easily for free for a second night - just sent them an email, and luckily, Klemenz was the guide again. And right after getting out of the city, he pulled over, and said that he knew were were going to see something great. From an untrained eye, it didn't look like much, but within 15 minutes we were treated to an amazing hour long show. Plus, he was great with tips for getting photos on a camera. I even got good photos using without an expensive camera and without a tripod. Great tour - highly recommend.

The trip was really made by our excellent guide, Clemens. He was truly passionate about the northern lights, and Iceland in general, and he made the whole experience one of the highlights of our trip. He loved telling is stories along the way while we were searching for the lights, and he was really knowledgeable about the various meteorological aspects in order to find the best viewpoint. The lights themselves were just awe inspiring and pictures can't do justice to the eeriness you feel when you witness them in total silence and darkness. Highly recommended. Bring plenty of warm clothes though!

Excellent tour. Our guide took us to several places on our hunt and we were initiallly unsuccessful. On our way back to Reykjavik, he kept a look out... and lucky he did because we managed to finally catch 2 beautiful moments!

Sadly we didn't see the lights but this guide tried so hard and never gave up. This company did a great job when they had to cancel prior days for weather.

This was a tough tour because you don't know if you will get to see the Northern Lights or not. We were lucky enough to find them. Our guide was very knowledgeable about cameras and was able to help us set them up so that you can get pictures.

Our tour by Super Jeep was quite the experience. : First we'd unfortunately been cancelled 4 days in a row due to terrible weather when we were there, however the company was great in continuing to rebook us at no cost until we had the chance to go. On our last night they took us out and we got to faintly see the Northern Lights. The guys were great in working to ensure we'd see them going to 3 different locations, and provided us with some tasty refreshments while waiting at one place.

The original tour was canceled because of weather. The only night we had available on our trip was already fully booked and the company was kind enough to book us with a different company on a similar tour. The lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. We waited for a few hours with the aid of hot chocolate and option schnapps and as we were leaving the northern lights came out and we pulled over to watch them. It was a spectacular display. The staff was very friendly and helpful (both companies). They were even coaching people on the best camera settings to capture the northern lights

This tour is great! When our trip was cancelled due to weather they worked with us to re-book us on the next night's trip. The guides took us to some cool spots where we were able to see the lights... and they provided us with hot chocolate and schnapps! Only negative was that while we were in a jeep with a small amount of people, the spots we went to had about 4-5 other jeeps so it wasn't really a small group tour.

Was a good tour. The driver was friendly and talkative. We only got to see white northern lights after a few hours searching which was disappointing. But it is the most common form. Could only tell they were northern lights through a camera where they popped out as green in the photos.
